Empowering Women Through Cancer Awareness
Voice Trust, in partnership with Apollo Hospitals, Madurai, Hema Medical Centre and Suji Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., organized a Cancer Awareness Program for Women on 25th November 2024 at the ITI Women’s Wing, K. Pudur, Madurai. The initiative aimed to create awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of timely treatment among young women.

oncologist from Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Madurai, known for his expertise in
medical oncology.

Orthopaedic Medical Check-up Camp for TNSTC Employees
The camp provided employees with specialized consultations, diagnostic screenings, and advice on maintaining better joint and bone health. Qualified orthopedic professionals conducted detailed evaluations, offering personalized guidance and treatment plans to participants. This initiative underscored the importance of preventive healthcare and the role of regular medical check-ups in ensuring the well-being of employees.

Seminar on Child Protection and Early Marriage Prevention
On 28th November 2024, Voice Trust Madurai, in collaboration with the District Child Protection Department, District Social Welfare Department, Women’s Rights Department, and Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Cholavandan, organized a Child Protection Seminar focusing on the Early Marriage Protection Act and raising awareness about child rights and safety. The event was graced by key dignitaries, including Shri Arul, Social Welfare Officer; Shri Shankar, Principal of the school; Mrs. Deepa, President of Sholavandan Union; Shri Jayaraman, Inspector General of Police; and Ms. Kamakshi, Director of Voice Trust. Mr. T. Murugesan, along with the teachers and students of the school, actively participated in the seminar. The discussions emphasized the importance of preventing early marriages, the legal frameworks in place, and the role of education and community involvement in ensuring child protection.

Posters related to Cancer were released by the Dean of Madurai Medical College, Dr A. Rathinavel in the presence of Voice Trust Director Mr T Murugesan, SBM Trust Director Mr Alagarsamy. The theme of World Cancer Day 2022 is ‘Close the Care Gap’. It is all about understanding and recognising the inequities in cancer care around the globe. The theme revolves around identifying and recognising global disparities in cancer care, that prevents people from certain economic strata full access to essential healthcare services and facilities. Inequity in cancer care costs lives.

- Approximately 70% of deaths from cancer occur in low- and middle-income countries.
- Around one-third of deaths from cancer are due to tobacco use, high body mass index, alcohol use, low fruit and vegetable intake, and lack of physical activity.
- Cancer-causing infections, such as hepatitis and human papillomavirus (HPV), are responsible for approximately 30% of cancer cases in low- and lower-middle-income countries (3).
- Late-stage presentation and lack of access to diagnosis and treatment are common, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Comprehensive treatment is reportedly available in more than 90% of high-income countries but less than 15% of low-income countries (4).
- The economic impact of cancer is significant and increasing. The total annual economic cost of cancer in 2010 was estimated at US$ 1.16 trillion (5).
Leading an active life, combined with healthy food habits is essential to good health.
We hope that this will lead to early detection which is important in the management and treatment of cancer and also prevention by making necessary changes in lifestyle.
Breast Cancer is rapidly rising amongst women in urban areas and it is the most common cancer in India. Early detection is essential in its management and treatment. Due to ignorance, fear, and social stigma many women present with stage III or IV cancer which requires surgery and extensive treatment. If detected early, then in most cases there will be less aggressive treatment and better chances of recovery.
Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India. It is the only preventable cancer and it can be detected in the pre – cancerous phase and cured.
Oral and Lung Cancers are highest among men and women in the urban as well as rural population and these can also be prevented to a large extent. Therefore, making people aware of the dangers of chewing tobacco and smoking is of great importance.
