“A Journey from Dusk to Dawn”-a Joint Effort of Voice Trust India and Own days Singapore

Consequently, VOICE trust focused mainly on health care of marginalized deprived, suppressed communities in village and hamlets where medical facilities are not available. The trust is now a well established Health care organization recognized by the government,hospitals and distraught downtrodden communities.

During the course of last year VOICE Trust came into contact with OWNDAYS an optical company with headquarters in Japan and shops in many of the Asian countries. Through recently launched Corporate Responsibility project to bring quality vision to the downtrodden in the developing world, VOICE Trust made an MOU with them for the current year to have eye camps in the project area and bring 100 percent vision to the underprivileged population.

The Cholavandan Camp

Cholavanthan in Madurai District Tamilnadu India is a Panchayath Union with a population of around 50,000 with a number of villages and smaller hamlets under its fold. The people here are mostly engaged in agriculture apart from other agro based occupations. On 21-05-2015 Voice Trust organized Free Eye Camp was organized here in collaboration with OWNDAYS Eye Glasses manufacturing Company, Singapore.

300 people from 7 to 70 years of age participated in this camp and benefited. 25 people were identified after careful investigation and cataract operations were done with support of the Tamilnadu Government health services.70 persons were identified to have free Eye Glasses worth Rs 2000/-each with the generous and glorious support from OWNDAYS company.

On 12-07-2015 a function was organized at Cholavanthan to distribute the free Eye Glasses to the 70 beneficiaries. Most of the beneficiaries belonged to the 60+ age group. They all had deficient vision prior to the camp. All beneficiaries had an expectant winning smile on their faces when they arrived at the venue of the camp.

They were all very happy that at last with collaborative efforts of Voice Trust and OWNDAYS, they were now able to see the world with complete vision. Until now they were not able to afford to go for eye investigation and buy the glasses due to their extreme poverty. But now they are able to have quality eye glasses worth Rs 2000/- free of cost, thanks to OWNDAYS.

The Executive Director Mr. Murugesan and the staff members of VOICE Trust were present and felicitated the people and beneficiaries on the occasion. The village elders and the people’s representatives were very appreciative of the efforts of VOICE TRUST and OWNDAYS.

The Meenakshipuram Camp

Meenakshipuram in Madurai East Block of Madurai District Tamilnadu India is part of Karuppayurani a Panchayath Union with a population of around 50,000 with a number of villages and smaller hamlets under its fold. The people here mostly engaged in handloom weaving apart from other occupations. On 20th August 2015 Voice Trust organized Free Eye Camp in the area.

275 people from all age groups participated in this camp and benefited.30 people were identified after careful investigation and cataract operations were done with support of the Tamilnadu Government health services.90 persons were identified to have free Eye Glasses. The prescriptions were sent to Singapore OWNDAYS for their approval and possible follow up. OWNDAYS informed that they will come and distribute the spectacles to the beneficiaries in person.

On 04-09-2015 a function was organized at MEENAKSHIPURAM Community Hall to distribute the free Eye Glasses to the 90 beneficiaries. More than 50% of the beneficiaries were children. They all had deficient vision prior to the camp. For this function the team from OWNDAYS with six delegates under the leadership of Mr. Take Umiyama Managing Director OWNDAYS Singapore arrived on the dot with the prescribed spectacles on hand.

The delegation was given a traditional welcome by the people with Aarathi and Parivattam. They were taken to the hall in a procession and at the hall the village elders and leaders gave them a warm reception by providing them with garlands and shawls in the presence of Mr. Murugesan Executive Director Voice Trust. Then the school children treated the guests with songs dances and speeches. The Panchayath
president and the vice president were present during the occasion. After the introductory remarks by the Executive Director, the delegates distributed the spectacles to all the beneficiaries and made on the spot corrections wherever needed.

It was indeed a great moment for all the people to see the satisfactory and happy smiles on the faces of all those who received the spectacles. Then the people’s representatives thanked the visiting delegation.

The delegation then visited the panchayath middle school and planted seedlings in the school premises. All the children and the teachers took active interest and took part in the proceedings. They all assured that the seedlings will be taken care of, with proper watering and nurturing.

Since it was 4th September, one day prior to the Teacher’s Day on the next day, Voice Trust organized a small function in the school to felicitate all the teachers. The visiting delegates took part in the function and wished all the teachers to have great teaching career. MR. Murugesan on behalf of VOICE Trust distributed books and mementoes to all the teachers and advised the gathered children of the school to abide by the teachers’ guidance if they want to succeed in life.

After the school function the visitors visited two of the beneficiaries both of them handloom weavers and had interviews with them. Both had very positive remarks to make and they said that now that they have improved vision they will be able to concentrate in their work and will be able to earn more. They will also be able to come out of their negative feelings and a lot of positive things will begin to happen in their lives.
